I Atomic Number

The elements of the periodic table sorted by atomic number

Chemists regard the atom as the fundamental building block of all matter. The development of the Periodic Table and our understanding of it in terms of atomic structure are key achievements in science and help us understand and predict reactions and chemical combinations. With all the uncertainty in the world today one thing is certain we can all do the right thing and support each other. I think that art is essential and expressing oneself is also necessary. Atomic number The number of protons in an atom of an element is its atomic number. Atomic Number, Mass Number and Atomic Weight The number of protons in the nucleus of an element is its atomic number. It is possible to confuse these values, but they are quite distinct from one another. Atoms consist of a nucleus containing positively charged protons and electrically neutral neutrons, with electrons orbiting some distance away. An explanation of the superscripts and subscripts seen in atomic number notation. Atomic number is the number of protons, and therefore also the total positive charge, in the atomic nucleus. The Rutherford–Bohr model of the hydrogen atom (Z = 1) or a hydrogen-like ion (Z 1).

For chemistry students and teachers: The tabular chart on the right is arranged by Atomic number.

The first chemical element is Hydrogen and the last is Ununoctium.

Please note that the elements do not show their natural relation towards each other as in the Periodic system. There you can find the metals, semi-conductor(s), non-metal(s), inert noble gas(ses), Halogens, Lanthanoides, Actinoids (rare earth elements) and transition metals.
